Peace Corps Week: A Bit of History

Today is the 54th anniversary of the initiation of Peace Corps.  According to a post by the National Peace Corps Association today, there have been "almost 220,000 Americans who have lived and worked alongside citizens of 140 countries in the past 54 years".  Here is a video of President John F. Kennedy at a press conference on March 1, 1961, announcing the beginning of what would become (in my opinion) one of his most-revered legacies.

The Peace Corps' Mission is to promote world peace and friendship by fulfilling three goals:

  • To help the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women
  • To help promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served
  • To help promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans

The Peace Corps is certainly a legacy of which I'm proud to be a part.

Love always,
Jess
