Well, I’m coming up on four months here in Belize, and this week was a little tough as I had to miss out on what was probably the first of many special events. I wanted so badly to be with all my family members on the day of my cousin Kristen’s wedding. I know it was a beautiful day.
And for those of you that were wondering about the climate...there is no crisp fall temperatures here. Today's temp is close to 90 with a about 90% humidity--a heat index of 104. (Steamy!) I sure am missing the fall foliage and sweatshirt weather!
Okay, okay! I miss you all, but enough moping! On a more positive note, I've been keeping busy here in rural Belize. A group of ladies in the village wanted to start an exercise program, so even though I'm still in my three-month integration phase, I have joined them and helped them get the classes started. We do Zumba-style aerobics videos three times per week. It's great exercise and also a social hour. It's been fun, and I look forward to adding a health education component once we start implementing some of our PC-approved programs.
Also, the Catholic school here asked me to help plant a community garden. Gardens certainly take a while to get started and the kids only meet once per week to help so the progress is slow, but we have a space selected and cleared. Hopefully, we can sow in the next couple of weeks. I can't wait to harvest with the students...I think it will be a blast!
I know it feels like the posts are getting shorter and fewer, but I enjoy reflecting on my time here every time I do get a chance to blog. I'll have to try a little harder to keep it up!
Love always,
Jess
