I thought it might be interesting for you to see what I tote around the village on a daily basis.
- Peace Corps Phone: It has the numbers of all staff members and fellow volunteers preprogrammed (and a growing number of village counterparts every day).
- Peace Corps Lanyard: We received these during training, and I stole Emily’s idea to attach my room key to my phone with it.
- Sunscreen: I usually do full body sunscreen before I leave the house in the morning, but I need to reapply to my face through the day (probably due to the inordinate amount of sweating I do…).
- Bug-Spray: I use the kind with DEET in it that PC gave us in our med kit. With Dengue, Malaria, and Chick-V in the area, getting a million mosquito bites is not recommended.
- Tissues: Toilet paper is not made readily available at every bathroom or latrine. Need I say more?
- Baseball Cap: Sun protection with the additional benefit of less sweat running into your eyes when you are teaching PE!
- Gallon-Size Plastic Bag: The ultimate multipurpose tool, but most commonly used to prevent items three and four from leaking.
- Peace Corps Flash Drive: It is now a joke at the school between the teachers about how much I care about this little guy. If it is out of my sight for more than five minutes, I get nervous.
- Camera Case: A sturdy case for all electronics is a must!!
- Digital Camera: This camera is probably six years old, but it still works great. I like to tote this around as opposed to my iPhone because it is fairly valueless without the specific charger and adapter cord.
- Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) for allergic reaction
- Loperamide (Immodium) for diarrhea
- Pen: Peace Corps hooks you up with a nice pen at every training. It is makes my day every time.
- Water Bottle: Has anyone ever seen a broken Nalgene? PC gave us one as well, but I’m saving it for backup.
- Antacid (Tums) for mild stomach issues/heartburn
- Acetaminophen (Tylenol) for pain or fever
- Ibuprofen (Motrin) for pain or fever
- Diotame (Pepto Bismal) for upset stomach
- Medi-Phenyl for allergy-type symptoms
- Daily/Monthly Planner: My mom sent this for Christmas, and I use it everyday.
- First Aid Kit: Left from my days as a Girl Scout leader, this holds 11, 12, 15-19, and 22..
- Multi-Tool: A mini-multitool. I got mine for free when I returned an LL Bean backpack. (Ask me about their incredible return policy some time.)
- Messenger-style Bag: Not too big. Lightweight material. Dark color. It has been helpful.
Love always,
Jess
