To start, I wanted to say Merry Christmas (a few days late)! I hope that you all had a beautiful holiday and enjoyed your time with family and friends. I know I certainly missed being able to personally wish all my loved ones a Merry Christmas. I was lucky enough to share the holiday with my host family, partaking in local Christmas traditions, though. We went out for posadas (carols), made cakes from scratch, and cooked chicken over the open fire. Even though there aren’t too many holiday decorations adorning the village, it was unmistakably Christmas when the whole family gathered around the table for a delicious meal.
I know I’ve really slacked off on the blog posts the past two months, but with the new year approaching, I resolve to post more stories and pictures of my work in Belize. I guess when you first reach your site, everything is new and exciting, and you can’t wait to share those experiences. After a while, you fall into a routine, rotating through all of your running projects and visits. It’s still exciting and the best job I’ve ever had, but sometimes, when I would sit to write a blog post, it would sound just like the last one, so I’d end up scrapping it.
Fortunately, 2015 holds a lot of plans for new projects. As my three-month integration/adjustment period has come to a close, I am ramping up for a packed schedule in the new year. I will be in the school teaching health lessons and organizing sessions (and possibly a health fair) for members of the community. I’m really looking forward to seeing how everything turns out, and I promise to keep you posted!
Love always,
Jess
